Keeping a colony or two of honey bees in your backyard can supply you with plenty of honey for family and friends, as well as increase your garden’s productivity, by ensuring adequate pollination. Perhaps just as important, though – as any beekeeper will tell you – is that spending time with these gentle creatures can be a truly gratifying experience: it’s a fascinating, hands-on hobby that engages both the mind and the body. And there is no better way to introduce your children to nature’s wonders than the gentle honey bee!

The classes will include instruction on how to assemble the hive, install the bees, inspect the colony, and much more. A brief historical background and some basic biology and hive sociology will be covered, followed by an introduction to the parts of the hive, tools and materials commonly encountered. There will be both lectures and demonstrations, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Join us and begin to experience the deep satisfaction of working with one of nature’s most amazing creatures!
