Bulbine frutescens is a drought-tolerant perennial native to southern Africa, where it thrives along river banks and sandy hillsides. Bulbine does best in full sun to partial shade, with foliage growing to a foot or so tall and flower stems standing another foot above. Sap from its leaves is often used medicinally, similar to that of aloe vera. Photo by Ed Szymanski.
