10.00 ($5.00 for SBGMI Members with Coupon Code)\n\nDescription:\n\nDeclan
Schroeder\, is Associate Professor of Veterinary Population Medicine at t
he Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Building\, University of Minnesota.\n\
nHoney bee (Apis mellifera) populations in many parts of the world are exp
eriencing considerable losses annually.  A combination of many factors is
responsible for honey bee decline. In particular\, the combination of the
parasitic mite Varroa destructor (Varroa) and the viruses the mite vector
s are major drivers of colony mortality. These include the viruses from De
formed wing virus master variants (DWV-A and DWV-B)\, Acute bee paralysis
virus (ABPV)\, and its variant Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV). More
recently\, two other viruses are starting to increase in prevalence\, name
ly Sacbrood virus (SBV) and Lake Sinai virus (LSV). Here I will describe t
he use of new molecular tools to unravel the complexity of co-infections i
n honey bees that together impact the way we interpret current PCR based s
urveillance data.\n\nRandy Oliver has kept bees for most of his life\, and
views beekeeping through the eyes of a biologist\, researcher\, and natur
e lover. He makes his living as a commercial beekeeper\, and maintains the
website ScientificBeekeeping.com. Randy is a popular writer in the bee jo
urnals and an invited speaker worldwide\, sharing his knowledge of bee bio
logy\, colony health issues\, and practical beekeeping management.\n\nAbou
 t Randy’s presentation he states: “In 2017 I proposed a simplified met
hod for commercial queen breeders to select for varroa-resistant stock\, a
nd then undertook a demonstration project to see if it would work. After s
ix years of strong selection\, we appear to be making substantial progress
! The basis of genetic improvement programs in any organism is selective b
reeding\, where individuals are chosen that are expected to have offspring
with desirable properties. This is directed evolution: fitness is defined
by the breeder rather than by the individual’s ability to survive and r
 eproduce in nature.
