SUMMARY:Conscious Beekeeping: Practical Organic Approaches for Healthy Bee
 s and Growing Apiaries
DESCRIPTION:Conscious Beekeeping: Practical Organic Approaches for Health
 y Bees and Growing Apiaries\nWith Bill Day\nSaturday\, April 29\, 9:00am-5
:00pm \n$95\n\nThe growing popularity of small-scale beekeeping is good n
ews for the bees\, but it also raises its own set of challenges. Rarely do
es a small-scale beekeeper encounter Colony Collapse — but every beekeep
er must contend with rampant Varroa mites\, scant forage\, and scarce high
-quality package bees and nucs.\n\nConventional approaches focus on beatin
g back or defeating these challenges\, but the search for a silver bullet
to every problem seems only to unearth new problems. This workshop approac
hes the problem from the other side: What can we do to help our bees thriv
e and flourish in the present-day environment? Starting from an understand
ing of the honeybee colony as an organism unlike any other found in nature
\, we will consider:\n\n• Swarming as an expression of the bees’ vital
 ity\;\n• Healthy rhythms of life in the hive\, and how to support them\;
\n• When to intervene and when to let your bees manage on their own\;\n
 • Increasing your apiary naturally with splits and swarms while breeding
  better\, locally-adapted queens\;\n• Alternative hive designs\;\n• Va
rroa control through acid treatments and brood interruption\;\n• And mor
 e.\n\nWeather permitting\, we'll visit the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary\, wh
ere techniques discussed in the classroom will be demonstrated.\n\nBeginni
ng beekeepers are strongly encouraged to attend the optional Friday after
 noon beginners’ session.\n\nhttp://www.pfeiffercenter.org/workshops_and_
