SUMMARY:22nd Annual Field Day at the USDA Honey Bee Lab in Baton Rouge
DESCRIPTION:The USDA Honey Bee Breeding\, Genetics and Physiology Laborator
 y and the Louisiana State Beekeepers Association will hold the 22nd Annual
  Field Day on\nSaturday\, October 27\, 2018. The event will be held at the
  laboratory\, located at 1157 Ben Hur Rd\, Baton Rouge LA 70820. This is n
 ear the intersection of Nicholson Drive (Hwy 30) and Brightside Dr.\, whic
 h is about two miles south of the LSU football stadium.\n\n\nGates will op
 en at 9:00 a.m. with presentations and activities scheduled from 10:00 a.m
 . to 3:30 p.m. The Field Day will include a series of talks in the morning
  from members of the Louisiana Beekeepers Association and the USDA-ARS sta
 ff about Louisiana beekeeping and research being conducted at USDA-ARS lab
 . The afternoon features break-out sessions for beekeepers of all ranges o
 f experience. The beginning beekeeper course is directed to those who have
  little to no beekeeping experience. Topics will include basic bee biology
  as well as necessary beekeeping equipment and management techniques. A qu
 estion and answer session precedes a practical demonstration in honey bee 
 colonies. The intermediate beekeeping course is focused on the beekeeper w
 ith a moderate amount of experience that is now ready to take it to the ne
 xt level. Topics will include making splits\, swarm catching\, parasite mo
 nitoring techniques\, and treatment options for Varroa mites and small hiv
 e beetle\, followed by a final field session examining open colonies. This
  session will address the major problems in colony health and include disc
 ussion and guidance on the primary pests and pathogens affecting honey bee
  colonies. There will be a workshop for advanced beekeepers that focuses o
 n principles of selective breeding followed by a final session on queen re
 aring techniques.\n\nA nonrefundable pre-registration fee of $30.00 is req
 uired for attendees 12 years of age and above.  Children 11 and under mu
 st stay with their parents at all times. Registration includes a catered l
 unch. Pre-registration will open August 15\, 2018. You may pre-register (a
 nd submit payment) at labeekeepers.org with the option to pay by credit ca
 rd or PayPal. A printable pre-registration form will be located at labeeke
 epers.org that may be mailed along with a check made payable to Louisiana 
 Beekeepers Association to Beth Derr\, 210 Meadowlark Dr\, Jefferson\, TX 7
 5657 and must be postmarked by October 12th. Pre-registration will close O
 ctober 12th. All other registration will be collected at the door for the
